What you will do
You guide all technical parts of substation and plant work for large builds. You lead engineers, set clear goals and check results. You watch the full design plan, update schedules and check risks. You make sure the team meets design and safety targets. You complete high voltage outdoor design when needed and direct designers or other engineers on key tasks. You work with sourcing, project managers, CAD staff and other groups to meet project needs.
You prepare single line drawings, site layouts, bus plans, cable routes, grounding layouts and other key documents. You check design studies and run needed math or reviews. You manage bills of material for high voltage gear. You write or check technical specs and support sourcing on vendor quotes. You serve as the main point of contact for all technical matters on the project. You guide change control and track risk.
You support the project engineering director on work done by sub contractors. You check scope, hours, change steps, quality and schedule. You make sure the work meets the client’s clear to quality needs. You also help with tenders for substation or HVDC projects by giving hour estimates and equipment input.
Requirements
You need a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a known school. A degree in electrical engineering helps. You must hold a PE license or show that you plan to get one soon. You must be able to sign off on your work and the work of those you lead. You need at least ten years of substation work for utilities or renewable plant projects. You must know primary outdoor design and the studies linked to it. You must be able to travel up to twenty percent, both local and abroad.
Desired traits
You should know high voltage substation rules in North America, such as IEEE and ANSI. You should understand grid codes and how to build design sets even when specs are not clear. You should know EPC or EEP project steps and have strong knowledge in civil needs tied to substation work. You should understand how to size batteries, breakers, cables and other key parts.
