Sport Club Manager

Duties/Pligte

Strategic Leadership and Management

  • Supporting the Vision, Mission and Values of Maties Sport at all times with appropriate annual plans and performances of competitive teams.
  • Leading the delivery of all internal sport programme management, events, and internal competition fixtures.
  • Managing the club’s facilities maintenance and logistics in collaboration with SU Facility Management.
  • Leading sustainable club governance and ensuring adherence of club-members and supporters to SU’s and Maties Sport’s code of conduct.
  • Representing Maties Sport at meetings of committees and/or associations for sport, both internally and externally and where applicable.
  • Actively overseeing day-to-day functioning of the Maties Sport Club.
  • Strategic planning, implementation, and commercialisation aligned with the annual Maties Sport Club Advancement Plan.

Programme Management

  • High performance and competitive sport code management.
  • Ensuring implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting on the recruitment and retention strategy.
  • PACER programme (holistic student-athlete and coach support) implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting.
  • Recruiting competent, qualified and motivated coaches for the sport for which this position is responsible.
  • Supporting the management and performance evaluation of coaches and planning appropriate development of coaches.
  • Planning and managing events for the club, and supporting management of external events.

Financial planning and management

  • Preparing, managing and being accountable for the respective sport clubs’ budgets, day-to day financial requests, as outlined by the club’s strategic plan, the Maties Sport business plan and SU’s Financial Management Regulations.
  • Preparing monthly reports in consultation with the Maties Sport accountant.
  • Being compliant to all financial management requirements as per SU’s policy.

Organisation and Human Resource Management

  • Planning, setting up and managing the logistics required for sport fixtures and events (transport, match officials, etc.).
  • Human resource planning and management.
  • Club governance and annual reviews.
  • Stakeholder management, including club members, coaches, and support structures.

Administration

  • Managing the internal and external registrations for assigned sports activities.
  • Ensuring clear and timely communication of sports news and events in consultation with the media coordinator and unit leaders.
  • Ensuring the accurate and organised recording of all sports-related matters in a timely manner.
  • Keeping accurate minutes of meetings.
  • Ensuring that all University, Maties Sport and other relevant compliance matters are fully covered and satisfied.
  • Writing or overseeing the writing of sport reports as required.

Facility Management

  • Planning and managing the facility’s maintenance.
  • Planning upgrades to the facility.
  • Usage management of the facility.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

Minimum qualifications:

  • A recognised qualification/degree in sport management/science.
  • A valid driver’s license and own transport.
  • The position requires working after hours, including evenings, on weekends and public holidays. At least three years’ experience in sport club management within a higher education environment.

Skills

  • The ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally with diverse stakeholders.
  • Advance computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently.
  • The ability to lead sport clubs, collaborating with coaches and staff.
  • The ability to give strategic direction in an ever-increasing professional environment.
  • A participative and effective leadership and management style
  • High level of management and leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Result-oriented.
  • Administrative skills: the ability to provide accurate and informative written and verbal reports.

Knowledge

  • An understanding of sport governance, club structures, and athlete development.
  • Familiarity with university-level sport systems and policies.
  • An understanding of recruitment, retention, and development of athletes and coaches.
  • Skilled in budget planning, financial reporting, and in being compliant with financial regulations.
  • Skilled in logistics planning for sport events, including transport, officials, and facilities.
  • Skilled in inventory management, registration processes, and reporting standards.
  • Internal and external communication strategies.
  • The ability to coordinate with media and marketing teams.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • Experience in football club management within a higher education environment.
