Purpose of Job
- Accountable for the full value chain of engineering solutions and governance at a mine, owns execution auditing and management of operational and capital engineering plans. Determining engineering standard operating practices on the mine / plant as well as how to deliver maintenance – if and when to replace / repair equipment, considering skill, spares holding, maintenance KPI’s and processes.
- Manages condition monitoring (predictive maintenance) to ensure compliance to schedules and principles.
- Carries a 2.13.1 legal appointment for the mine.
- The incumbent holds a Government Certificate of Competence (GCC) and must apply the law utilising knowledge, experience and skill to interpret and the law and make correct decisions. To improve business objectives sustainably at sub assembly level, at machine level, at systems level and concept level, including machine, people, process and standards.
Key Accountabilities
- (Safe Production) – Ensure execution of engineering and maintenance strategies / overhaul plans that optimise sweating of assets and total cost of ownership – determine how to deliver maintenance, if and when to replace / repair equipment • Maintenance cost growth vs. PPI, R/t • Maintenance budget – actual vs. budget • Downtime / shift (infrastructure and in-section equipment) • Overhaul / maintenance program – plan vs. actual 2. Audit and approve operational projects engineering compliance and manages engineering Standard Operating Practices (SOP) on the mine • Adherence to Engineering principles and legislation (i.e. MM07) • Compliance to engineering governance bodies (standardisation committees) • SOP / COP adherence • # major findings (engineering inspections) 3. Assess economics / engineering viability of non-major engineering business cases and provides specific, in-section expertise and coaching • Total cost of ownership (TCO) • % delivery against Defect Elimination process 4. Manage condition monitoring on the mine and audit compliance • Condition monitoring program • Failure trend analysis and root cause elimination • Execution of Predictive Maintenance recommendations (backlog) 5. Safe Production – Support mine to achieve set targets by coordinating planning between mines/ shafts • Rand per ton (R/t), Tons per CM per shift (t/cm/shift), Reserve utilisation % • Volumes vs. monthly TQF (Including Quality) and vs. annual budget, % ash, % fines • Stonework progress – metres (distance blasted per shift) or actual vs. target, Pit room (including flexibility horizontal drilling coverage) 6. (Finance) – Prime responsibility for annual budget including volume, capex and cost requirements and control cost to ensure production volumes are achieved within budget • Delivery against budget and reporting calendar vs. target • Working capital & cash position vs. target, cash flow vs. forecast • Price and TCO performance vs. index and benchmarks 7. (SHE) – Overall accountability for strategy to strive towards best in class safety performance and continuous improvement of key safety metrics to maintain license to operate • SHE compliance rates vs. targets (especially major findings), % outstanding actions on findings • Zero harm, Zero fatalities, LWDCR • # incidents, dust overexposure, noise overexposure, water releases 8. Long term resource planning – Recruitment, training and career development • Vacancy rates vs. Staff Establishment (vacancies incl. Absence due to TSD / PSD), AWOP, Successors for critical positions • Key role turnover rate vs. industry average, absenteeism, employee engagement and enablement score (%), Tons/man/year, Monthly bonus targets • Mining charter, WIM and SLP commitments vs actual, training as % of payroll MAJOR CHALLENGES / PROBLEM SOLVING • Supporting the mine in delivering on safe production plan for the year for the mine, balancing short term production targets vs. long term sustainable maintenance practices • In-depth knowledge of, as well as application of various sets of legal requirements, engineering principles • Influx of new technology that requires highly skilled workforce to manage the complexity OPERATING ENVIRONMENT • This position has a 2.13.1 legal appointment and is accountable for the full value chain of engineering solutions and governance at a mine within a highly regulated industry. • Balancing short term production pressures with long term sustainable engineering practices. • It is a highly unionized environment (multi-unions) and engagement with both unions and employees are critical. • Complex interfaces with contractors and suppliers also exits. • Information from various sources needs to be analyzed, interpreted and integrated to make trade-off decisions in the best interest of the mine.
