Researcher – DNA Marker Technologies (Three (3) Years Fixed-Term Contract) (Roodeplaat)

Description

  • Initiates new and manages existing research projects on DNA marker technologies including molecular breeding to support breeding programmers.
  • Together with breeders, designs and implements molecular breeding research experiments in support of the various breeding programmers.
  • Keeps the division abreast with new developments on DNA marker technologies by reviewing new publications & research reports.
  • Actively sources and secures new research opportunities and contributes to proposals for own research and towards the proposals of others.
  • Compiles own, and contributes to other progress reports (internal and external).
  • Captures, analyses and interprets data.
  • Disseminates technology through peer-reviewed scientific articles, popular publications, etc.
  • Contributes towards the creation of IP and PBR.
  • Provides supervision and mentors postgraduate students, research technicians and assistants. Understands management of co-workers and mentees.
  • Expected to supervise or co-supervise at least Students and Interns within the unit.
  • Seeks networking opportunities (attends scientific gathering, working with farmer communities, etc.).
  • Works under guidance and support of senior researchers.

Requirements

  • PhD in Plant Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genomics, Plant breeding or Genetics.
  • At least 3 years of relevant research experience post-MSc in a scientific research environment.
  • Strong background and experience in molecular biology, plant molecular markers, genomics and applications of molecular tools and latest molecular breeding technologies.
  • Experience in the use of Bioinformatics and other genetic data analysis tools.
  • Experience in coding programs for data analysis will be an advantage.
  • Accurate data collection skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite especially Excel.
  • Minimum of 3 peer-reviewed publications in the relevant field.
  • Demonstrated national recognition of scientific expertise and standing.
  • Evidence of progression toward international recognition, with measurable outcomes of high quality and impact.
  • Proven record of generating external income for research projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently write research proposals at PhD level, supported by proposal writing during postgraduate studies.
  • Proven experience presenting research results nationally as part of MSc and PhD-level activities.
  • Demonstrated competence in communicating scientific findings effectively (verbal and in writing).
  • Proven track record of mentoring and supervising/co-supervising researchers and postgraduate students.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain national and international partnerships and networks, with support from senior colleagues.
  • Demonstrated strategic and operational planning skills and expertise, developed under guidance from senior researchers.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Valid code B driver’s license.
  • Registration with a scientific and professional body is an added advantage.
  • NRF rating is also considered an added advantage.
