Plant Superintendent (D2)

  • Our mine, situated in the Limpopo Province about 60 kilometers from Lydenburg and 40 kilometers from Burgersfort, and is a world-class producer of Chrome Ore.

The successful applicant will report to the Plant Manager or nominee.

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree / BTech Metallurgical Engineering / Extractive Metallurgy / Chemical Engineering.
  • Code 08 (B) Driver’s Licence.
  • Advantageous: Management Development Programme (or equivalent).

 EXPERIENCE (including but not limited to):

  • 3 – 4 years in a mine / plant / production environment, with 2-3 years management experience.
  • 3 – 4 years PGM and Chrome Processing Plants working experience.

DUTIES (including but not limited to):

  • Manage production processes and asset performance to achieve production targets safely and cost-effectively. To ensure production processes comply with Mine, Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislative requirements.

Financial Perspective:

  • Contribute to annual departmental budget planning by compiling operational, capex and labour budgets for sub-function and submit to line management for approval.
  • Manage effectively sub-function and its objectives in line with approved budgets (operational, capex and labour), report variances as required and recommend / implement remedial action within span of control.
  • Review and authorise payments in line with approved budget and policy and submit for final processing.
  • Identify operational, labour and capex requirements within sub-function for efficient delivery of targets and submit recommendations to line manager.

Internal Business Processes Perspective:

  • Provide constructive and value-added inputs into short- and long-term production planning processes drawing on technical knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Drive actions to encourage, implement and improve plant and related systems/processes.
  • Authorise and drive initiatives aimed at eliminating waste, improving productivity and/or reducing operating costs.
  • Liaise with appropriate line and maintenance staff to ensure efficient management of interfaces which (can potentially) impact on production objectives.
  • Manage, control and improve production processes, including contractor performance against service level agreements to achieve production targets.
  • Assist management in setting achievable production targets, considering client demand and internal process capacity and constraints to manage short-term production plan.
  • Ensure optimisation of process control system by recommending and implementing effective process controls.
  • Ensure validation of process-related data, identify deviations and manage process performance actively and purposefully.
  • Ensure product quality standards and parameters are complied with to meet customer requirements by receiving, interpreting and acting upon relevant data/information received.
  • Manage all tailings storage facilities in line with relevant legislation by deploying resources and actions accordingly.
  • Manage HDPE piping installations by deploying resources and oversight to ensure objectives of plant maintenance strategy are achieved.
  • Ensure plant machines meet requirements for ore management.
  • Ensure management and availability of plant machinery.
  • Ensure legal compliance on all plant machinery.
  • Oversee the training and licensing of all heavy vehicle operators.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of all roadways used by operators within designated responsibility in the plant.
  • Manage contractors per contractual and service level agreements to meet heavy vehicle operating and delivery standards.
  • Provide oversight and controlled management for quality of ore material to ensure adequate feedstock on the plant.

Customer / Stakeholder Relations Perspective

  • Build, manage and maintain healthy diverse workable relationships with internal and external stakeholders to assist in achievement of organisational goals.
  • Provide relevant and specialised technical support to applicable stakeholders (internal customers, statutory bodies, etc.)

Organisational & Growth Perspective

  • Allocate work to direct reports as required and provide appropriate level of management, control and/or delegation in the plant production environment drawing on situational leadership and management techniques.
  • Take remedial action as appropriate to ensure quality of work outputs are consistently, safely and cost-effectively sustained to meet plant/process goals and objectives.
  • Provide mentorship support as required to metallurgists-in-training for assimilation in the plant and broader organisational environment, and to meet the technical and behavioural requirements of the training programme.
  • Manage and review proactively performance of direct reports in terms of performance agreements, and participatively discuss performance successes and gaps, agreeing performance improvement action plans and deliverables.
  • Ensure high levels of discipline in the workplace through the appropriate application of people-related policies and procedures as these impact on performance, discipline, grievances and ethical behaviour.
  • Implement salient parts of strategic and operational plans as these apply to plant, production, competence and behavioural requirements to meet plant/process-specific objectives.
  • Ensure plant/process-specific competency requirements are maintained and developed to meet required performance levels to meet production goals and operations.

SHERQ Adherence / Compliance

  • Translate SHERQ goals applicable as derived from business plan into clear direction and implement effectively and efficiently for specific function.
  • Ensure adherence to statutory safety regulations and mine standards, procedures and practices such as PPE, safe working practices, re-entering periods.
  • Effectively communicate new regulations and procedures as and when required to ensure employees and contractor awareness and correct implementation thereof.
  • Assist in rendering of appropriate first aid to injured person(s) as and when required or refer to qualified persons

Implement Change Initiatives

  • Authorise and drive initiatives aimed at eliminating waste, improve productivity and reduce operating costs.
  • Initiate and lead Functional/ Departmental change.
  • Implement successful change initiatives, plan and ensure optimal resource utilisation within designated area.
