PhD Student – Biotechnology/Applied Microbiology/Plant Pathology (Roodeplaat)

Description

  • Identify and characterize Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) for insecticidal proteins such as Cry/Vip genes.
  • Conduct a bioassay of Bt toxins on common maize insect pests such as the Fall Armyworm
  • Study the microbial diversity of Bt inoculated/non-inoculated soils using metagenomics sequencing.
  • Molecular analysis of target genes (Cry, Vip etc.) using PCR, and high-throughput sequencing.
  • Publish in reputable journals and present at scientific congresses.

Requirements

  • MSc in Plant Pathology/Biotechnology/Microbiology or Entomology
  • Experience in Entomology (insect rearing and bioassays) is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of molecular microbiology and experience in bacterial handling in the laboratory.
  • Experience in next generation sequencing (metagenomics) and microscopy.
  • Experience in glasshouse /field experiments and possession of driver’s license is an added advantage.
