MSc Internship – Virology (Two Years Fixed term Contract)
Description
- Undertakes MSc studies for two years in Plant Virology on maize infecting viruses.
- Sampling maize and grass plants with viral symptoms in the field.
- Conducting DNA/RNA extractions, (RT)-PCR, sanger sequencing and NGS for plant virus diagnostics.
- Maintaining infected control plants.
- Conducts infectivity trials in a controlled environment.
- Provide research support to Crop Protection research projects as the affiliated postgraduate student.
- Engages with relevant stakeholders within affiliated research projects.
- Disseminate project results through, scientific or popular publications, conferences and peer reviewed publications.
- Independent research.
- Provide verbal/written reports on work activities and results to supervisor(s).
Requirements
- BSc (Hons) in Plant Pathology, Virology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or related field.
- Applicants should be highly motivated graduates with a strong academic background, with a demonstrated capacity to conduct research at postgraduate level.
- Previous lab experience (DNA/RNA extractions and RT-PCR) is desirable.
- Knowledge of plant viral pathogens and diagnostic techniques will be an advantage
- Capability of designing and carrying out high-level, complex research experiments independently.
- Understanding of basic principles of research.
- Basic computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office suite.
- Good Communication Skills (Written and Verbal).
- Ability to organize, priorities and work systematically.
- Driver’s license.
- Excellent English language (Spoken and written).
