PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

• The Maintenance Assistant will provide support to the Maintenance Team by performing basic repairs, preventative maintenance tasks, and general upkeep of equipment, machinery, and facilities.
• This role ensures that production equipment is well-maintained, downtime is minimized, and the working environment is safe and compliant with food safety standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment & Machinery Support

• Assist in routine maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication of production machinery and tools.
• Support senior maintenance staff in troubleshooting breakdowns and repairs.
• Report equipment faults, hazards, and abnormalities promptly.

Preventative Maintenance

• Carry out scheduled checks on equipment (e.g., belts, motors, refrigeration, cutting machinery).
• Replace basic parts such as filters, fuses, seals, and light fixtures.
• Assist in ensuring that preventative maintenance schedules are adhered to.

Facility Maintenance

• Perform basic building maintenance such as minor plumbing, painting, and carpentry work.
• Assist in maintaining cold rooms, freezer units, and general factory utilities.
• Ensure work areas are kept clean, organized, and safe always.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all Health & Safety regulations (OHS Act) and company procedures.
• Ensure compliance with food safety standards (HACCP, FSSC 22000, R638).
• Use tools, PPE, and equipment responsibly and safely.

General Support

• Assist with moving equipment and setting up work areas when required.
• Provide standby support during production runs if urgent repairs are needed.
• Support the Maintenance Manager in maintaining accurate records of repairs and services.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
• Technical certificate (electrical/mechanical/plumbing) is advantageous.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in a maintenance or general handyman role, preferably in a food production environment.
• Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration systems will be an advantage.
