Environmental Health & Safety Manager

The role

  • The position provides leadership and technical expertise to achieve EHS legal compliance and corporate goals for EHS performance and ensures compliance with EHS policies and applicable regulations through partnership with all functions & local management in SA.
  • Develop and deliver effective global and local policies, procedures, auditing, training, communications, and educational materials to promote increased understanding, appreciation and adherence to safe operating practices throughout the workplace to ensure compliance with Kellanova standards and government regulations.

Location of the role

  • The position is full time based at Kellanova Springs plant. One day a month requires travel to the Head office in Woodmead for EHS responsibilities to ensure compliance.

  • The EHS team consists of a full time EHS business partner.

Work Environment

  • Working in a manufacturing facility that will require working more than standard hours and working on different shifts at various times.
  • The incumbent is required to work effectively in a fast-paced high-pressure environment. Understands and meets internal and external business needs with professionalism and a sense of urgency. Must be able to balance conflicting priorities and still provide the organization with clear direction and focus.
  • The work assignments may include shift work in a noisy and dusty environment.

A Taste of What You’ll Be Doing

Strategic Management

  • Develops and leads plant specific environmental, health and safety strategies to achieve key performance goals
  • Sets budgets and ensures adherence thereto.
  • Identify and prioritize SA environmental, health and safety plan requirements

EHS Management:

  • Leads the EHS team to ensure legal, global and site policy compliance in all aspects of EHS.
  • Establish, develop and review policies to maintain and manage comprehensive environmental, health and safety services for the Springs Plant, safeguarding all personnel and Company assets.
  • Drives the EHS Centre of Excellence (COE) to ensure phase progression in the KWS journey for the Springs site
  • Support all KWS Pillars in all elements
  • Prepares sites for all relevant global and external audits (EHS, GRC,DEKRA, DOL), compiles action plans following audit recommendations, and drives the implementation thereof to ensure completion
  • Conducts internal site audits between external audits to ensure compliance and in preparation for external audits
  • Provides professional leadership to manufacturing, maintenance, quality, R&D, planning and project teams to ensure operational health & safety specifications are in line with latest legislation.
  • Co-ordinates the investigation of any Environmental incidents, accidents, safety hazards or risk and recommend preventative measures to minimise potential risks to both personnel and the Company, thus ensuring that the sites safety performance improves continually.
  • Proactively investigates best practice in safety systems and makes recommendations which will help the Springs Plant achieve more effective operation and achieve cost improvement objectives without compromising the environment.
  • Drives, tracks and provides feedback on the implementation of accepted recommendations.
  • Assesses EHS training needs for the facility and liaises with the People COE and EHS BP to implement as necessary.
  • Initiates, implements and manages developments to the Management systems to drive improvements in line with the Springs Plant business objectives.
  • Implement resources optimization and reduction programmes.
  • Support the AMEA region to conduct EHS audits as and if required
  • Form part of Global recommended COP to drive direction to ensure robust EHS global programmes are developed prior to rollout across the Kellanova sites
  • Drive occupational monitoring programmes for the sites
  • Develop EHS strategy plan for the year and ensure execution of the plan
  • Develop EHS budget for the year and ensure adherence to budget and cost saving as per the finance requirements for the site
  • Manage direct contracts under EHS function i.e. Security, clinic, doctor contract, Effluent management, waste management
  • Contract review for direct contactors i.e. Waste management, Effluent treatment plant management, security management, medical service of nurse and doctor and identify effective ways of working and improvements that can contribute towards cost savings
  • Ensure all accidents / dangerous Occurrences are properly investigated by the teams and lessons learnt are shared across the region.
  • Ensure timely reporting of all related incidents to the DOL as per OHS Act
  • Ensure timely reporting of incidents within Insight (As per the Kelloggs Requirement) and maintain a system for recording, reporting and investigating injuries, accidents and dangerous occurrences. Provide statistical summaries to the site EHS Committee and draw attention to significant trends and occurrences.
  • Accountable for required environmental metric and regulatory reporting.
  • Works with South Africa business unit leadership to respond to complaints and concerns as necessary from external stakeholders in relation to environmental issues.
  • Work with site team to develop and implement initiatives to reduce energy and water usage, emissions and waste for the site.
  • Collaborates with the Plant Director in representing Kellogg in various external forums such as local community forums and
  • Ensure Fire Arrangements are maintained in good order and fire drills are carried out on all the premises

Security Management

  • Forms part of Regional Security team and appointed as Business Security Coordinator (BSC) for the site
  • Leads the Security contracting teams to ensure legal and policy compliance in all aspects of security management.
  • Manages and coordinates the on-site Security Company.
  • Analyses possible risks and proactively sets systems in place to eliminate such.
  • Ensures that all security global and regional standards are complied with.
  • Conducts annual security assessment to ensure gaps are identified and actions plans are implemented to drive closure.
  • Actively drive security incidents to understand RCA and implement CA and PA
  • Conduct global security training (food defense) for local security contracting company
  • Drive monthly security meetings with security contractors

Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with South Africa Legislation relating to EHS on local, provincial and national levels.
  • Participates actively and contributes effectively as a part of the Local incident management team (LIMT)
  • Ensure compliance with EHS Global and site policies, procedures and standards

People Management

  • Manages labour relations by:
    • Ensuring that all employees are full conversant with IR procedures and policy.
    • Instilling a culture of resolving employee relations issues through informal dispute resolution procedures.
    • Ensuring that formal disciplinary cases are properly prepared and conducted.
  • Ensure effective management and application of the performance management process.
  • Assess manpower requirements and develop, implement and monitor succession planning principles.
  • Plans appropriate employee training and development, in order to ensure the continued and smooth operation of the department.

We’re Looking for Someone With

EDUCATION & RELEVANT YEARS JOB RELATED EXPERIENCE

  • A Relevant Tertiary qualification, coupled with a minimum of 5 years relevant management experience in an FMCG environment.

Candidate minimum qualifications:

Effective communication (both written and verbally) and interpersonal skills.

Sufficient / in depth,  knowledge of:

  • SAP
  • MS Excel and powerpoint
  • A solid understanding of Continuous Improvement practices and ongoing productivity improvement programmes.
  • Security standards, policies and procedures
  • Fire safety management programme and local legislations and Fire Prevention standards
  • FMCG Food Industry
