Economics and Economic History

The Department of Economics and Economic History invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

Economics and Economic History

  • The Department of Economics and Economic History at Rhodes University is a vibrant and diverse academic unit offering undergraduate to doctoral programmes, including a specialised Master of Commerce in Financial Markets.
  • With a strong emphasis on student centred teaching and learning, the department integrates rigorous teaching with research excellence across areas such as financial markets, international trade, development, environmental and natural resource economics, and the creative economy.
  • Its research groups—focusing on Money, Banking and Financial Markets; Development, Institutions and Labour Markets; and Environmental and Natural Resource
  • Economics—investigate pressing economic and social challenges, particularly within the Eastern Cape and broader African context.
  • The department also incorporates strong community engagement and service-learning components in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Main Objectives

  • All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), and community engagement, recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties.
  • Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.

The Requirements

  • At least a Ph.D. in Economics or equivalent, or, in exceptional circumstances, a Masters’ degree in Economics, or equivalent with completion of a Ph.D in view (final draft completed).
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level, with postgraduate teaching experience an advantage.
  • Disciplinary expertise in Public Policy, Institutional Economics and related areas.
  • An emerging research profile, with at least some journal publications and conference presentations
  • Research supervision or co-supervision at postgraduate level
  • Track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).
