Process Engineer

RCL Foods is currently looking for a Process Engineer to join our Groceries & Spreads Business Unit. The role is based in Boksburg and will report to the Process and Project Engineering Manager.

The role of the Process Engineer is critical in achieving the targets of the Manufacturing function as well as supporting the Business Strategy.

The purpose of the Process Engineer role is to:

  • Provide technical support to factory operations by leading, coaching and supporting the problem solving of process deviations that may occur.
  • Identify optimisation opportunities that reduce manufacturing costs, increases production efficiency and provides quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with the R&D department to successfully deliver innovation and renovation projects.
  • Contribute towards the development of the site’s CAPEX agenda.
  • Deliver on the CAPEX agenda by executing projects within an agreed time, scope and budget.

Experience and Training

  • 3 – 5 years minimum experience as a Process Engineer in FMCG, preferably a foods processing environment.

  • Data-driven decisions – Collect & analyse data related to the manufacturing performance such as costs and quality metrics to provide insights and recommendations to support informed decision-making by the Supply Chain Leadership Team.
  • The incumbent must be able to forecast process outcomes, identify quality issues pre-emptively, and adjust manufacturing inputs to meet precise specifications.

Duties & Responsibilities    
Plant Support:

  • Process Design, Standardisation and Improvement
  • Offers subject matter expertise on the manufacturing process
  • Design and develop manufacturing processes with the aim of improving efficiency, reducing waste and lowering overall production costs.
  • Evaluate and standardise existing processes to enhance the performance of the equipment, people and enhance overall productivity.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to lead, support and coach on problem solving using root cause analysis techniques
  • Establish corrective and preventative countermeasures from problem solving
  • Analyze processes and find areas of opportunity that reduce costs and increase production efficiency
  • Conduct high-level loss and waste analysis of the factory KPIs to identify processes that require reduction in variation and ensure consistent and predictable operations.
  • Support teams in the development of technical standards to ensure alignment with lean manufacturing principles.
  • Champion the Siqalo Foods RCA Way with focus to eliminate waste and reduce variability.
  • Lead, coach and train team members on the overall problem solving.
  • Lead the application of different tools and techniques, such as statistical process control (SPC), key performance indicators (KPIs), or root cause analysis (RCA) to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the factory processes.
  • Guide the teams in defining process mapping to visually represent workflows, making it easier to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.
  • Lead the management of change (MOC) for all process related changes to ensure correct planning, implementation and monitoring of changes within manufacturing.
  • Support and lead focused improvement initiatives

Product Innovation/Renovation Projects:

  • Collaborate with the R&D, Brand and Marketing teams to deliver on innovation and renovation projects
  • Co-ordinate deliverables as a technical lead throughout the various stages of the project
  • Provide technical support during the feasibility phase of the project
  • Lead the capability phase as well as launch production

Execute the Best-in-Class Initiatives:

  • Define and set the standard for performance by reviewing industry trends and understanding benchmark.
  • Continuously build and improve Siqalo’s knowledge base and capabilities in the process engineering area.
  • Develop new approaches, tools, processes that can give Siqalo Foods the edge.
  • Execute Best-In-Class initiatives for the Siqalo Foods Manufacturing organization and report against progress, support required, and savings realized.
  • Prepare Best-in-Class reports for the Siqalo Foods Executive Team for review and insights.

Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) Projects:

  • Compile project briefs/proposals for CAPEX budgeting
  • Conduct preliminary design and scoping
  • Lead detailed engineering (with cross-functional collaboration internally and externally, as well as leveraging off integration with RCL)
  • Compile capital expenditure proposals to enable business approval and allocation of funds
  • Lead HAZOP studies
  • Oversee equipment procurement and pre-assembly
  • Lead FAT’s
  • Lead installation and commissioning
  • Ensure operational readiness for project handover
  • Ensure accurate project documentation is maintained
  • Management of contractors

Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance:

  • Ensure that all process engineering activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Promote a safety-first culture and enforce safety standards as defined and amended among all team members.
  • Ensure aspects of process safety are adhered to (Risk Assessments, HAZOP studies, MOC)
