Cooper Trainee
Purpose of the Role
- To learn and develop the traditional and technical skills of coopering under the guidance of experienced coopers within a three-year period. The Cooper Trainee will assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of barrels and alternative wood products while ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of staves, hoops, and other barrel components.
- Learn to use hand tools and machinery safely and effectively.
- Support Coopers with barrel assembly, charring/toasting, and repairs.
- Maintain a clean and safe working area in line with workshop standards.
- Participate in on-the-job training, workshops, and assessments.
- Handle materials, barrels, and equipment safely and responsibly.
- Observe and comply with health, safety, and quality standards always.
- Actively participate in TPM activities
- Comply with all instructions and training requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
- Physically fit and able to handle manual work (heavy lifting, bending, standing for long periods).
- Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail.
- Willingness and ability to learn a skilled trade through practical training within a 3-year period.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Punctuality and attendance reliability
Advantageous Experience/Knowledge
- Prior exposure to woodworking, carpentry trades.
- Experience with hand tools, planers, bandsaws, thicknesser and power tools.
- Knowledge of workshop and/or factory safety.
- Previous work experience in a manufacturing, winery, brewery, or agricultural environment.
