Resident Medical Laboratory Scientist – Forensic DNA Unit (CEDFOCI)

The DNA Learning Centre Science City invites qualified and passionate professionals to apply for the position of Resident Medical Laboratory Scientist at the Centre for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CEDFOCI). This role is designed for a highly skilled scientist committed to excellence in forensic DNA analysis, laboratory quality systems, and criminal investigation support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct forensic DNA analyses including evidence collection, profiling, and interpretation.
  • Maintain strict chain-of-custody and ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Implement and monitor ISO 15189/ISO 17025 quality systems and accreditation requirements.
  • Operate and maintain molecular laboratory instruments (PCR, qPCR, CE analyzers, etc.).
  • Document and review results with high reliability, accuracy, and confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, the justice system, and research partners as appropriate.
  • Support training, mentoring, and capacity building activities within the facility.

 Required Qualifications

  • BMLS degree from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years active license with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
  • Current practicing license and good standing status with MLSCN.
  • Completion of NYSC (or possession of an exemption letter).
  • Strong skill set in molecular diagnostics: DNA extraction, quantification, PCR, electrophoresis, STR profiling, and forensic sample handling.

Desirable Competencies

  • Experience in forensic DNA casework or criminal investigation environments.
  • Knowledge of LIMS, biohazard safety, and secure handling of biological evidence.
  • Familiarity with legal frameworks, expert testimony, and forensic reporting.
  • Research experience and scientific publications are an added advantage.
  • High ethical standards, attention to detail, excellent communication and teamwork skills.
