Principal Design Engineer – Mechanical/Piping
JOB PURPOSE / OBJECTIVE
- The Principal Design Engineer – Mechanical/Piping will lead and manage the design and engineering of mechanical and piping systems for oil and gas projects.
- This includes responsibility for engineering integrity, adherence to applicable codes and standards, and coordination of multi-disciplinary inputs.
- The role plays a critical part in delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions across FEED, EPC, and brownfield modification projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design Engineering Leadership
- Lead the mechanical/piping design team across conceptual, FEED, detailed engineering, and EPC phases.
- Prepare and review engineering deliverables including:
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- General Arrangement (GA) drawings
- Isometrics and support details
- Equipment layout and datasheets
- Line lists, valve lists, and tie-in schedules
- Conduct pipe stress analysis, pressure drop calculations, and thermal expansion analysis using CAESAR II or equivalent tools.
- Ensure proper selection of materials, valves, piping components, and supports in line with process requirements and Nigerian/International codes (ASME, API, ISO, NACE, etc.).
Standards & Compliance
- Ensure all designs are compliant with:
- Nigerian Oil & Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) guidelines
- Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) regulations
- Relevant international codes and standards (ASME B31.3, API 610/650, etc.)
- Client-specific specifications and quality procedures
Project Coordination & Execution
- Coordinate with process, civil/structural, instrumentation, and electrical teams for integrated project delivery.
- Interface with vendors and third-party contractors to ensure engineering specifications are met.
- Participate in design reviews, model reviews (3D), HAZOPs, and constructability assessments.
- Ensure timely delivery of engineering documents and support project controls in schedule and cost tracking.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
- Supervise and mentor junior engineers and designers.
- Allocate design tasks and ensure quality, accuracy, and completeness of deliverables.
- Conduct internal technical audits and peer reviews.
- Promote HSE best practices in all engineering activities.
Client & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as the primary technical contact for clients on mechanical/piping scope.
- Attend client meetings, provide technical presentations, and support project proposals or bidding efforts.
- Prepare and submit technical reports, method statements, and design philosophies.
QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE
- Education: B.Eng / B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university (M.Sc. an advantage).
- Professional Certification: COREN registration is mandatory; membership of NSE, ASME, or API is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in oil and gas design engineering, with at least 5 years in a lead or principal engineering role on major projects in Nigeria or West Africa.
Software Proficiency:
- CAESAR II (Pipe Stress)
- AutoCAD / Plant 3D / PDMS / E3D / Navisworks
- Microsoft Office, Bluebeam or other markup tools
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong understanding of oil & gas field development, pipelines, FPSOs, flow stations, refineries, and modular skids.
- Deep expertise in mechanical equipment design and piping layout best practices.
- Leadership and team-building skills with a focus on mentorship.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work in multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Willingness to travel to site locations and project offices as required.
