People Officer at AfriLabs

People Officer

Job Summary

Introduction

  • AfriLabs is scaling fast. As we grow our team and deepen our impact across Africa, we’re building the systems and culture to match our ambition. We’re looking for a driven and dynamic People Officer to help power this next phase.
  • In this role, you’ll work closely with the People Management Lead and support a People Associate to bring our people strategy to life. Shaping an energetic, high-performing, and values-aligned team. If you’re passionate about people, growth, and making things happen, this is your moment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Culture & Engagement: Promote a vibrant and values-aligned culture by supporting initiatives that foster inclusion, collaboration, and motivation across a geographically distributed team.
  • People Strategy Execution: Translate organisational strategy into people processes that scale with the team’s growth, improve structures, and ensure alignment across departments.
  • Performance & Growth: Support the implementation of performance management systems that balance goal setting with developmental feedback.
  • Coordinate reviews and provide data-driven insights to leadership.
  • Talent Development: Drive learning initiatives and individual development plans (IDPs) in collaboration with managers.
  • Support leadership development and internal capacity building.
  • Workforce Planning & Succession: Identify skills gaps and collaborate with leadership to create succession and staffing plans that ensure business continuity.
  • HR Operations: Oversee recruitment, onboarding, policy implementation, and compliance processes.
  • Supervise the People Associate and ensure consistent delivery of core HR services.
  • Process Innovation: Support ongoing digitisation of HR workflows and co-lead the improvement of systems that enhance employee experience and operational efficiency.
  • Well-being & Recognition: Implement staff well-being initiatives and recognition programs that drive motivation and resilience.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Actively engage with other departments to understand people-related needs and co-create solutions that improve productivity and cohesion.
  • Other Duties: Take on special projects and other responsibilities as delegated by the People Management Lead.

Who You Are

  • A people-centered professional with 4+ years of experience in People/HR roles, preferably in the nonprofit or innovation ecosystem.
  • A strategic thinker who understands what it takes to scale people systems in a growing, impact-focused organisation.
  • Tech-savvy and analytical, with a strong ability to use data and digital tools to support decisions and improve outcomes.
  • A confident and empathetic leader who can supervise others, build trust, and communicate effectively across diverse teams.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and entrepreneurial — someone who can anticipate needs, manage competing priorities, and take initiative.
  • Committed to building inclusive, agile, and high-performing work environments in Africa.

Minimum Qualifications

  • First degree in Human Resources, Administration, Management, Law, or related field.
  • A Master’s degree or MBA is an added advantage.
  • Membership in a recognised HR professional body (is an advantage)
  • Strong understanding of the nonprofit/development sector.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and HR-related digital tools (e.g., HRIS, performance software).
