Maintenance Manager

Main Responsibilities
Maintenance Planning and Execution:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance schedules for all vessels and onboard equipment.
  • Coordinate routine and non-routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections.
  • Liaise with captains, chief engineers, and technical teams for planning dry dockings, overhauls, and repairs.
  • Ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks in line with class and flag state requirements.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and reports for audits and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety, environmental, and maritime regulations.
  • Support root cause analysis and troubleshooting of technical issues onboard.
  • Manage the process of equipment repair, servicing, and return.
  • Coordinate with third-party service providers and shipyards for outsourced maintenance activities, and recommend or select the most suitable provider to minimize failure risk.

Budgeting and Resource Control:

  • Assist in preparing and managing the maintenance budget, including dry-docking and capital expenditure.
  • Monitor actual 3rd l spending against forecasts and ensure cost efficiency in maintenance operations.
  • Monitor spare parts and consumables inventory; raise purchase requests as needed.
  • Review and approve requisitions for spare parts, consumables, and technical services.
  • Negotiate with suppliers, shipyards, and contractors to ensure cost-effective procurement and quality service delivery.

Technical Oversight and Supervision:

  • Supervise the technical condition of engines, propulsion systems, generators, navigation, communication, and safety equipment.
  • Ensure adherence to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standards and best engineering practices.
  • Conduct regular inspections of vessels to assess maintenance needs and operational readiness.
  • Monitor fuel, lube oil, and spare parts consumption, initiating corrective actions to minimize wastage and downtime.
  • Request for tools, hardware and software, and manpower, required to develop and improve in-house capabilities of key maintenance activities.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all vessels meet regulatory requirements, including those from NIMASA, Class, Flag, ISM, and ISPS codes.
  • Implement and enforce safety and environmental policies related to technical operations.
  • Maintain readiness for audits and inspections conducted by regulatory bodies or clients.

Team Coordination and Supervision:

  • Lead and supervise the technical crew and shore-based maintenance personnel.
  • Conduct performance appraisals, training, and competency development for engineering staff.
  • Foster collaboration with the operations and logistics teams to align maintenance schedules with operational plans.
  • Develop an action plan or schedule for every emergency / unplanned maintenance, follow up with all stakeholders including management, crew and vendors to ensure timely and quality maintenance event.
  • Initiate, set, and enforce various maintenance KPI’s and perform bi-annual presentation to management to set future goals and monitor efficiency and compliance within the maintenance function.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Prepare regular reports on vessel maintenance status, downtime, performance metrics, and incidents.
  • Maintain up-to-date technical files, maintenance logs, and certification records.
  • Recommend technical upgrades and improvement initiatives in conjunction with equipment OEM to enhance vessel efficiency and reliability.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or HND in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering or technical management field.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years’ experience in vessel maintenance or engineering management, including at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience with offshore support or security escort vessels preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of marine propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, electrical systems, and onboard safety equipment.
  • Familiarity with NIMASA, IMO, and Class regulations.
  • Proficiency in maintenance management software, and Microsoft office packages
  • Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
