Job Summary

The Education Officer plays a central role in the planning, coordination, and implementation of Education in Emergencies (EiE) activities in the targeted LGAs of Dikwa, Monguno, and Ngala. Working closely with the Project Director, the officer ensures that all education interventions align with project proposals, donor requirements, and relevant standards such as the Safe School Declaration (SSD). The role involves overseeing quality and inclusive learning for children, facilitating teacher training, supporting School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) and Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), and ensuring consistent progress monitoring and impact measurement. In addition, the Education Officer will contribute to project startup and research, lead volunteer recruitment and staff capacity building, support data analysis and reporting, and ensure the direct implementation of project activities across the designated LGAs.

Key Responsibilities of the position

Role/Mission

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of formal and non-formal education activities in line with project objectives and Education in Emergencies (EiE) standards.
  • Ensure the delivery of quality, inclusive, and protective education interventions that improve children’s learning outcomes in literacy, numeracy, and life skills.
  • Coordinate the development and delivery of teacher training content on pedagogy, inclusive education, child protection, psychosocial support (PSS), and safeguarding (PSEA).
  • Promote inclusive learning environments by supporting the integration of children with disabilities through adapted materials and interventions.
  • Oversee and support the establishment, training, and functioning of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), and facilitate the development and monitoring of School Development Plans (SDPs).
  • Monitor school attendance, learner retention, and the effectiveness of back-to-school and community enrollment campaigns.
  • Conduct routine visits to project schools to support school profiling, school-level assessments, data collection, and analysis in collaboration with MEAL and WASH teams.
  • Ensure SSD-compliant infrastructure and safety measures (child-friendly spaces, muster points, WASH access) are integrated into school environments.
  • Lead the recruitment, supervision, and capacity building of Education Assistants and community volunteers, ensuring technical guidance and mentoring support.
  • Engage and coordinate with LGEAs, State Ministry of Education, community leaders, parent groups, and EiE Working Group partners to ensure harmonized implementation and advocacy.
  • Contribute to proposal development and resource mobilization by providing field-based needs analysis, feedback, and lessons learned to the Project Director.
  • Ensure the collection and archiving of all documentation and means of verification (MoVs) related to project activities and outcomes.
  • Coordinate with the logistics unit to ensure timely procurement and delivery of materials and inputs to the appropriate locations, and the subsequent distribution of the items.
  • Ensure proper use of workplans, procurement plans, and spending plans to guarantee on-time activity implementation and budget utilization.
  • Compile and submit timely updates, progress reports, and inputs for monthly, quarterly, and annual donor reports.
  • Promote PSEA and safeguarding standards within JRS and among beneficiaries, ensuring inclusive, safe, and dignified learning spaces.
  • Represent JRS at local and field-level coordination meetings with government authorities and education partners.
  • Any other tasks relevant to the position as assigned by the Project Director or designated technical manager.

Qualification

  • University Degree or equivalent in Education, Social Sciences, or related field

Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, or related field; PGD in Education is an advantage.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience implementing education programs in conflict-affected settings.
  • Good knowledge of EiE principles, SSD, and the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP).
  • Experience with teacher training, child safeguarding, and SBMC engagement.
  • Excellent coordination, facilitation, and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English and local languages (Kanuri/Hausa) preferred.
