EAL Teacher
JOB PURPOSE
- To provide specialised English language instruction to pupils for whom English is not their first language, supporting their academic success and integration into the school community.
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
- The EAL Teacher will work closely with pupils, SEN teachers and parents to deliver tailored language support, promoting linguistic and cultural diversity within the school.
RELATIONSHIPS
- The EAL teacher is selected by the Director of Schools in consultation with the HOS/KSC and HR.
- The EAL teacher will report directly to the KS Coordinator. However, in the absence of the KSC, he/she will report to the HOS/DHOS who will also provide strategic leadership and day to day oversight. The EAL teacher works closely with other teachers, support teachers (SEN), pupils; and collaborates with parents/guardians, external language support services where required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and deliver engaging EAL lessons to individuals or small groups
- Develop and implement personalised language learning plans
- Assess pupil progress and adjust instruction
- Adapt curriculum materials for EAL pupils
- Provide in-class support and guidance
- Collaborate with teachers to modify assessments
- Identify and address language barriers
- Foster cultural awareness and understanding
- Regularly update parents on pupil progress
- Offer guidance to parents on supporting EAL pupils at home
- Maintain a well-organised and stimulating EAL learning environment
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development

- Assessment, Recording and Reporting
- Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use outcomes to adapt teaching accordingly;
- Provide quality marking and feedback and identify clear targets for future learning as appropriate
- Carry out assessment cycles (e.g., collection of effort and attainment assessments, reports) as agreed by the school.
- Be familiar with the Code of Practice for identification and assessment of Special Educational Needs and keep appropriate records on Individual Education Plans for pupils.
QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)/ TRCN
- Degree in English or related subject (e.g., linguistics, literature)
- TEFL or TESOL certification, or an equivalent EAL teaching qualification, is desirable.
- 2 to 3 years experience teaching EAL in a British school setting (desirable)
- Good working knowledge of the National curriculum and EAL frameworks
- Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills
- Experience working with pupils of varying age ranges
- Ability to adapt to diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
- Experience with language learning software and technology
- SEN experience or training
