Business Executive, Institutional Banking

  • The Business Executive, Institutional Banking is a senior executive accountable for driving the bank’s growth, profitability, and market positioning in the institutional segment. This includes government entities, blue economy stakeholders (maritime, fisheries, ports, logistics, renewable energy), and other high-value institutional clients such as multinationals, NGOs, and public-private partnerships
  • This role blends strategic leadership, market insight, relationship management, and operational oversight, ensuring the bank remains a trusted financial partner, drives innovative sector-specific solutions, and mitigates risk while delivering strong returns.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership & Market Development

  • Develop and execute the bank’s institutional banking strategy with a focus on sustainable revenue growth.
  • Identify and prioritize strategic sectors, including blue economy initiatives, government projects, infrastructure finance, and corporate solutions.
  • Translate macroeconomic, regulatory, and policy insights into commercial opportunities.
  • Lead market intelligence and competitor analysis to inform product and service innovation.
  • Align portfolio strategy with organizational goals, maximizing profitability and client satisfaction.
  • Drive business development initiatives to expand market share without overreliance on a single sector.

Institutional Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the primary executive interface for major institutional clients, including CEOs, CFOs, DGs, Ministers, and Board-level stakeholders.
  • Lead relationship management strategies, ensuring long-term partnerships and trust-building.
  • Advise clients on financing strategies, capital projects, trade, and treasury solutions.
  • Represent the bank in industry forums, government consultations, and sectoral initiatives, positioning the bank as a thought leader.
  • Facilitate multi-sector partnerships and public-private collaborations for project financing.

Credit, Risk & Portfolio Oversight

  • Approve and structure high-value, complex credit proposals, ensuring commercial viability and alignment with risk appetite.
  • Monitor institutional portfolios to maintain quality, diversity, and profitability, minimizing NPLs and sector concentration risk.
  • Implement robust risk assessment frameworks for emerging sectors like the blue economy where conventional credit models may be less applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, governance, and internal policy standards, including CBN guidelines, AML/KYC, and environmental/social governance (ESG) considerations.
  • Provide strategic oversight on portfolio optimization, pricing, and collateral structuring.

 Product Innovation & Sector Solutions

  • Collaborate with treasury, product, digital, and operations teams to design customized financial solutions for sector-specific clients.
  • Promote digital adoption and automated solutions, enhancing client experience and operational efficiency.
  • Develop innovative financing structures for government projects, maritime initiatives, renewable energy, fisheries, and related infrastructure.
  • Continuously benchmark products against competitors, ensuring market relevance, profitability, and client satisfaction.

Leadership, People & Performance

  • Lead a high-performing team of relationship managers, product specialists, analysts, and sector advisors.
  • Set performance objectives, KPIs, and growth targets for both individuals and the team.
  • Implement structured mentoring, coaching, and capacity-building programs.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and client-centricity.
  • Oversee talent acquisition and succession planning for institutional banking leadership roles.

Governance & Operational Excellence

  • Ensure strict adherence to governance frameworks, operational standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Drive process improvements, ensuring operational efficiency and reduced turnaround times.
  • Collaborate with risk, operations, legal, finance, and IT to ensure end-to-end delivery excellence.
  • Maintain readiness for audits, regulatory reviews, and internal assessments.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 15–20 years in institutional banking, including at least 5 years in senior leadership.
  • Experience in government, infrastructure, or emerging sector financing (maritime, fisheries, renewable energy, etc.) is highly desirable.
  • Strong record of credit structuring, portfolio management, and executive client engagement.
  • Professional certifications (CIBN, CFA, ACCA) advantageous.
