Anaesthesia Technician
Job Summary
The Anaesthesia Technician provides vital technical and clinical support to anaesthesiologists and critical care teams in the preparation, delivery, and monitoring of anaesthesia care for surgical and ICU patients.
This role ensures all anaesthetic equipment, drugs, and consumables are available, properly maintained, and safely operated to achieve optimal patient outcomes during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods.
Key Responsibilities:
Preoperative & Procedural Support
- Prepare and test all anaesthesia machines, ventilators, monitors, and related equipment prior to each case.
- Set up intravenous lines, airway management devices, suction units, and patient monitoring systems.
- Ensure the availability and functionality of anaesthetic gases, circuits, and emergency drugs.
- Assist in positioning and preparing patients for surgical and ICU procedures.
Intraoperative & ICU Assistance
- Assist anaesthesiologists in the induction, maintenance, and reversal of anaesthesia.
- Monitor vital signs and assist with adjustments to anaesthesia equipment as directed.
- Prepare and hand over necessary supplies and instruments during critical interventions.
- Respond promptly to anaesthetic and airway emergencies within the ICU or theatre.
Equipment Management & Maintenance
- Clean, sterilize, calibrate, and maintain anaesthetic and monitoring equipment in accordance with hospital and manufacturer protocols.
- Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs with biomedical engineering.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment checks, usage, and maintenance logs.
Inventory & Documentation
- Monitor and manage inventory levels of anaesthetic drugs, consumables, and accessories.
- Document patient data, anaesthetic events, and equipment usage in line with hospital policy.
Quality & Safety Compliance
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols at all times.
- Ensure compliance with ICU and operating room safety standards and institutional policies.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and clinical audits.
Job Requirements:
Education & Certification
- Diploma or Degree in Anaesthesia Technology, Biomedical Technology, or a related clinical science.
- Certification as an Anaesthesia Technician ( e.g., from a recognized professional body).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 2–5 years of experience as an Anaesthesia Technician in a hospital or ICU setting.
- Proven experience in operating and maintaining anaesthetic machines, ventilators, and monitoring devices.
- Familiarity with ICU workflows, sterile techniques, and emergency response procedures.
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent knowledge of anaesthesia and critical care equipment.
- Strong attention to detail, precision, and patient safety.
- Good communication and teamwork skills; able to collaborate with anaesthesiologists, ICU nurses, and surgeons.
- Ability to work under pressure in emergency and high-intensity environments.
- Proficiency in documentation and basic computer literacy (for electronic medical records).
