Lead Consulting Instrumentation Engineer
Job Summary
- The Lead Consulting Instrumentation Engineer provides expert technical leadership and consultancy services in the design, integration, and implementation of instrumentation and control systems across industrial, energy, and infrastructure projects.
- The role involves leading project teams, developing control strategies, ensuring system integrity, and guaranteeing compliance with international standards while meeting client and operational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership & Management:
- Lead and manage instrumentation and control system projects from concept to commissioning.
- Define project scope, technical specifications, deliverables, timelines, and resource requirements.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and ensure smooth collaboration among project stakeholders.
- Oversee the preparation of detailed engineering documents, drawings, and cost estimates.
- Track project progress and ensure delivery within scope, budget, and schedule.
Technical Design & Engineering:
- Design and develop process instrumentation systems, control panels, and automation solutions.
- Specify and select instruments (sensors, transmitters, valves, analyzers, PLCs, SCADA systems, etc.).
- Develop P&IDs, loop diagrams, control logic, and system architecture layouts.
- Provide technical guidance on installation, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation systems.
- Ensure all engineering designs and documentation comply with ISA, IEC, ISO, and relevant local standards.
Control Systems & Automation:
- Design, program, and integrate PLC/DCS/SCADA-based control systems.
- Develop control philosophies, functional specifications, and cause-and-effect matrices.
- Support system testing, FAT (Factory Acceptance Test), SAT (Site Acceptance Test), and commissioning activities.
- Troubleshoot and optimize process control and automation systems for improved performance.
Client & Stakeholder Management:
- Serve as the primary technical advisor and liaison with clients, vendors, and contractors.
- Provide consultancy services and recommendations to clients on instrumentation and automation solutions.
- Prepare technical proposals, feasibility studies, and bid documents.
- Support business development by providing expert input during project tenders and presentations.
Quality Assurance & Compliance:
- Implement quality control and assurance procedures across all project phases.
- Ensure all designs meet safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare detailed project reports, test documentation, and commissioning records.
Leadership & Mentorship:
- Supervise, mentor, and develop junior engineers and technicians.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Promote adherence to ethical engineering practices and professional standards.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Accuracy and quality of engineering designs and documentation.
- On-time, on-budget project completion rate.
- Compliance with instrumentation and safety standards.
- Client satisfaction and repeat business rate.
- Technical leadership and team performance outcomes.
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Qualification:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or related field.
- Master’s degree in Control Systems or Engineering Management is an added advantage.
Certifications:
- NSE, COREN registration preferred.
- Certified Lead Auditor in ISO 9001 is required (additional certifications in ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or API Q1/Q2 are a plus).
- Project Management certification (PMP/PRINCE2) is an added advantage.
- HSE Certification (Level 1–3) is an advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in instrumentation, control systems design, and consulting engineering.
- Proven expertise in industrial automation, process instrumentation, and control network integration.
- Hands-on experience with major PLC/DCS platforms (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider, ABB, Honeywell).
- Experience in oil & gas, power generation, manufacturing, or process industries preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong understanding of process control principles and instrumentation technologies.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, EPLAN, or other instrumentation design tools.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong project management, communication, and client engagement skills.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects and lead cross-functional teams effectively.
