Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Training Instructor

Job Summary:

  • The RPAS Instructor is responsible for developing and delivering NCAA-compliant training programs for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), with a focus on Basic, VLOS (Visual Line of Sight), and BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations. The role involves creating and updating ICAO-compliant Training Instructor Course (TIC) materials, including lecture notes, module plans, and presentations, ensuring they are accessible and up to date. The instructor ensures trainees acquire the required competencies and skills in accordance with Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) regulations governing unmanned aircraft operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct theoretical and practical RPAS trainings in accordance with NCAA-approved curriculum and syllabi, incorporating adult learning principles and varied instructional techniques.
  • Deliver ground school instruction on Basic, VLOS and BVLOS procedures, airspace management, navigation, aviation meteorology, specific operational risk assessment (SORA), human factors, and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare candidates for NCAA RPAS pilot assessments, providing comprehensive feedback and remedial training as needed to ensure alignment with competency-based standards outlined in Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority Regulations.
  • Develop and continuously update training manuals, lesson plans, and relevant course materials (e.g., case studies, simulations) in compliance with NCAA requirements and industry best practices.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed training records, flight logs, and progress reports for all trainees, leveraging digital platforms for efficient data management
  • Participate in internal audits and NCAA inspections, supporting compliance and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Assist in risk assessment and the development of safety cases for VLOS and BVLOS missions
  • Ensure trainees are familiar with NCAA remote pilot licensing requirements, airspace classifications, RPAS operational limitations, and mandatory reporting procedures.
  • Actively contribute to the organization’s Safety Management System (SMS) by proactively identifying, reporting, and mitigating hazards during all training operations, and participating in safety reviews.
  • Conduct periodic revalidations, refresher trainings, and performance evaluations for RPAS trainees.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Certified RPAS Instructor with valid Instructor Certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in RPAS operations, including VLOS/BVLOS missions, with verifiable logbook records.
  • Proven experience in delivering RPAS training programs in Nigeria or similar regulatory environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian airspace structure, NOTAM procedures, UTM systems (if applicable), and aviation safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with NCAA’s UAS regulatory framework.
  • Experience with fixed-wing, multirotor, or VTOL RPAS platforms and Ground Control Stations (GCS).
  • Technical knowledge of UAS communications, navigation, and surveillance systems (CNS).
  • Understanding of the NCAA-approved Operational Specification (OpSpec) processes and requirements for RPAS trainees.
  • Holds the NCAA-recognized Training Instructor Certification (TIC) and has an in-depth understanding of Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Regulations (Part 21), which will be an added advantage

Key Competencies:

  • Strong facilitation, public speaking, and instructional skills.
  • Good interpersonal and mentoring skills with the ability to train diverse candidates.
  • Excellent report writing and documentation skills.
  • Familiarity with SMS principles, risk assessment documentation, and NCAA reporting formats.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office suite and training platforms such as flight simulators or LMS tools
