Overview of position
- Our client plays a significant role in Katsina, Nigeria, through its Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response & Resilience (CPCRR) program. This initiative, led by our client in partnership with Mercy Corps Netherlands (MCN) & the Centre for Democracy & Development (CDD), aims to address the complex challenges faced by conflict affected communities in Northwest Nigeria.
- The CPCRR program focuses on promoting long term stability by addressing the root causes of conflict, enhancing community resilience & fostering socio economic development in 48 communities across 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Katsina & Zamfara states.
- Through integrated efforts, the CPCRR program aims to foster conflict prevention, crisis response & resilience in conflict affected communities, contributing to long term peace & socio economic development in the northwest of Nigeria.
- Our clients presence in Katsina is further reinforced by its operational sub office, which facilitates key meetings with officials & staff to support the program’s implementation. The organization collaborates closely with local leaders, Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) & government authorities to ensure the success of its initiatives.
- Working under the overall supervision of Chief of Mission, the direct supervision of the Head of Office in Katsina, with technical guidance of the Program Manager Livelihood as an additional supervisor, the Project Field Staff will be responsible for implementing & managing field activities related to livelihood & climate adaptation projects. This role involves working closely with local communities, partners & government agencies to ensure the successful delivery of project activities on the ground.
Role objectives
- Assist in implementing community based climate adaptation, mitigation plans & livelihoods projects.
- Support workshop facilitation to promote sustainable land management & conservation practices.
- Support the activities around the promotion of alternative clean cooking energy solutions.
- Support in leading reforestation & afforestation projects in the field, providing tree seedlings to households & keeping accurate supporting documents or means of verification of the implementation while ensuring organization standard of consent are taken.
- Support community led climate vulnerability assessments to identify risks & develop resource sharing agreements.
- Facilitate training sessions for community members, youth & local leaders on climate smart practices & sustainable resource management.
- Perform any other general administrative duties assigned by their respective manager.
Project reporting
- This role works under the overall supervision of Chief of Mission, the direct supervision of the Head of Office in Katsina, with technical guidance of the Program Manager Livelihood as an additional supervisor.
Key competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in development studies, environmental science, climate adaptation, environmental management, social sciences or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of field experience in project support or community engagement.
- Strong organizational & administrative skills.
- Excellent monitoring & reporting skills
- Excellent communication & interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently & as part of a team.
- Experience in the usage of Microsoft (MS) Office software packages (Word, Excel, etc.), knowledge of spreadsheet & data analysis.

Method of Application
Overview of position
- The primary role of the selected candidate, being a member of our clients Psychosocial Support (PSS) team will be to implement MHPSS / protection activities in Katsina state of Nigeria.
Role objectives
- Weekly update about the PMT’s activities, achievements & challenges with the Project Assistant & Program Manager.
- Plan & coordinate the weekly activities of the PMT, in collaboration with the Project Assistant.
- Conduct MHPSS & protection assessments in coordination with the Protection Assistant & the MHPSS National Program Officer.
- Map existing & available support provisions at the micro level, including but not limited to existing community structures, resources, relevant government ministries & parastatal services, health facilities, academic institutions, NGOs, CBOs, FBOs as well as UN entities & design, together with the supervisor, initiatives to reinforce their capacity.
- Develop an intervention plan in coordination with the Project Assistant & provide tailored MHPSS & protection services to the affected populations based on the needs, concerns & other risk factors identified during the MHPSS / protection assessment.
- Provide emotional & psychological support, including supportive communication, individual & group counselling as well as Psychological First Aid (PFA) to the affected population in need.
- Provide direct assistance to the most vulnerable individuals & families of the affected populations, such as women, children, the elderly, persons living with disabilities, survivors of violence & socially marginalized or excluded persons.
- Follow up on the integration of the abductees / escapees & their families into community life.
- Organize, together with the Social Worker of the PSS team, sensitization, information dissemination sessions (messages related to health, psychosocial concerns, GBV, PSEA & TIP) & problem solving group sessions on identified social problems encountered by the affected individuals & communities.
- Strengthen existing social networks & promote participatory initiatives aimed at activating protective, restorative & transformative psychosocial factors at the community level, such as mutual support, intra & inter family cooperation, public gatherings, peer to peer support & dialogue.
- Identify cases that require specialized intervention & refer them to the appropriate service providers in close coordination with the Protection Assistant & MHPSS National Program Officer & respond to cases referred by other organizations.
- Organize support & discussion groups & forums & coordinate with the PSS team members as to the need to integrate vulnerable individuals within the psychosocial groups’ activities.
- In coordination with the Protection Assistant & the MHPSS National Program Officer, provide technical guidance, capacity building training & supervision to community focal points, community structures & volunteers in the concerned communities, ensuring that the program’s activities are effectively communicated & carried out in participatory & inclusive ways.
- Report daily activities.
- Undertake duty travel to very challenging areas when necessary.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Project reporting
- This role will work under the overall supervision of the MHPSS / Protection Program Manager, the direct supervision of the Project Assistant MHPSS / Protection in Katsina & closely coordinating with the MHPSS / Protection Officers of the unit.
Key competencies
- University degree from accredited institutions in social sciences, social work, psychology, social rehabilitation or in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training & experience.
- Minimum of three years of relevant experience, including capacity building functions within the humanitarian field.
- Experience in the provision of MHPSS services (including (lay) counselling, individual & group support sessions, PFA & emotional support) to displaced & conflict affected individuals & communities.
- Working experience with our clients MHPSS / protection team, especially with one of the psychosocial mobile teams, is an advantage.
- Open, positive attitude & the ability to communicate in a trustful manner with all members of the affected community.
- Genuine care & respect for the needs of vulnerable populations with a strong belief in empowering marginalized & disenfranchised people.
- High integrity & willingness to conduct her / himself transparently & open to scrutiny.
