MEP BIM Engineer

  • Job Type Full Time
  • Qualification BA/BSc/HND
  • Experience 3 years
  • Location Nairobi
  • Job Field Engineering / Technical&nbsp

We are looking for a dedicated and skilled MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing) BIM Engineer to take a leading role in the digital design and coordination of our building services systems. This position is fundamental to our integrated project delivery approach, requiring an individual who can create and manage detailed, data-rich MEP models. The ideal candidate will be an expert in BIM processes, responsible for coordinating all MEP systems with architectural and structural elements to produce a clash-free, constructible, and highly efficient design. You will be a key player in leveraging BIM technology to optimize building performance and streamline the construction process.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

MEP BIM Modeling & Management

  • Develop and manage intelligent 3D BIM models for all MEP systems, including HVAC, electrical power and lighting, plumbing, and fire protection, using Revit MEP.
  • Ensure all MEP models are developed in accordance with the project’s BIM Execution Plan (BEP) and adhere to company standards and best practices.
  • Enrich MEP models with essential data, such as equipment specifications, materials, and performance criteria, to support analysis and facility management.
  • Maintain and update the MEP models throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring all design changes are accurately reflected and communicated to the project team.
  • Develop and customize MEP-specific Revit families and content to improve modeling efficiency and standardization.

Interdisciplinary Coordination & Clash Detection

  • Lead the MEP coordination process by integrating MEP models with architectural and structural disciplines in a federated model.
  • Perform regular, detailed clash detection using Navisworks to identify and resolve conflicts between MEP systems and other building components.
  • Generate and present clash reports in coordination meetings, collaborating with engineers, architects, and contractors to find effective solutions.
  • Proactively manage spatial allocation for MEP services to ensure efficient layouts and compliance with design and code requirements.

Documentation, Analysis & Support

  • Generate accurate and coordinated construction documents, including MEP plans, sections, schematics, and equipment schedules, directly from the BIM model.
  • Utilize the BIM model to perform analyses related to energy consumption, lighting, and system loads to support design optimization.
  • Extract material takeoffs and quantities from the MEP model to assist with cost estimation and procurement.
  • Provide technical support and training to design engineers and junior staff on BIM software and workflows, promoting digital literacy across the team.

Requirements

Hard skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience in MEP modeling and coordination for complex building projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of MEP systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection), including their design principles and installation requirements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in creating, managing, and coordinating detailed MEP models in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Strong understanding of BIM standards, data management, and collaborative workflows.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Mechanical System Design & Technical Leadership:

  • Lead the comprehensive design of mechanical systems for high-rise, commercial, and industrial projects, including HVAC, plumbing, drainage, and fire protection systems.
  • Perform and oversee detailed engineering calculations, including heating and cooling load analysis, energy modelling, and hydraulic simulations, to ensure system optimisation and code compliance.
  • Prepare and approve all technical design documentation, including detailed drawings, system schematics, equipment specifications, and performance criteria.
  • Conduct rigorous value engineering on mechanical systems to optimise for energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and long-term sustainability without compromising performance.
  • Stay current with the latest industry technologies, building codes, and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, NFPA, IPC) to ensure all designs are safe, compliant, and innovative.

Project Execution & Construction Support:

  • Act as the lead technical authority for mechanical systems during the construction phase, providing expert guidance to site teams and resolving complex installation challenges.
  • Manage and respond to all mechanical-related Requests for Information (RFIs) and review contractor submittals to ensure adherence to design intent and specifications.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to monitor the quality of installation, witness equipment testing, and ensure compliance with design documents and safety standards.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, structural engineers, and other disciplines to ensure the seamless integration of MEP systems within the overall building design.
  • Oversee the commissioning process of mechanical systems to verify performance and facilitate a smooth handover to the client and facility management teams.

Team Development & Mentorship:

  • Mentor and train junior and intermediate mechanical engineers, providing guidance on design best practices, calculation methods, and the use of engineering software.
  • Delegate design tasks effectively, reviewing the work of team members to ensure technical accuracy, quality, and professional growth.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence and collaboration, encouraging knowledge sharing and innovative problem-solving within the mechanical engineering team.
  • Assist in the development of internal design standards, workflows, and procedures to improve team efficiency and consistency.

Requirements

Hard skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is mandatory; a Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in the design of mechanical building services for large-scale commercial, residential, or industrial projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent professional chartership is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design of a wide range of mechanical systems, including central cooling/heating plants, complex hydronic systems, VRF systems, plumbing, and fire suppression systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of international and local building codes and standards related to mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering
