Storytelling and Content Manager
Key Responsibilities
Writing and General Communications
- Collect and develop participant, alumni, or staff stories that demonstrate HER Lab’s transformative impact across partner sites submitting polished content for review.
- Draft content for HER Lab platforms, including social media, newsletters, donor updates, press releases, and the website ensuring alignment with the approved branding and messaging.
- Maintain active relationships with partner teams and join check-ins to gather story leads, milestones, and quotes that reflect participant journeys.
- Contribute to the development of materials for advocacy campaigns that highlight HER Lab’s role in advancing gender equity, mindset shifts, and dignified work for young women.
Social Media and Digital Storytelling
- Collaborate closely with the Digital Communications Manager to plan, script, and produce digital content including reels, short videos, testimonials, and photo stories that spotlight HER Lab participants, mentors, and community champions.
- Adapt content for multiple platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, X, and the HER Lab website) to ensure cohesive tone, design, and messaging across all channels.
- Ensure all digital content upholds HER Lab’s safeguarding and consent standards and accurately credits partners and donors.
Advocacy and Media Engagement
- Support the Communications Lead in translating participant and community stories into advocacy content such as op-eds, issue briefs, social media campaigns, and thought-leadership pieces that contribute to shifting community mindsets.
- Contribute to the planning, identification, and implementation of advocacy and awareness campaigns under Intervention 10, ensuring participant voices and lived experiences are at the center of messaging.
- Assist in documenting and disseminating learnings from advocacy initiatives, ensuring they inform future communication strategies and policy dialogue.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate Degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Development Communication, or any field which hones the skills of critical thinking and communications.
- 7+ years of progressive experience producing innovative and compelling stories.
- Proven track record in strategic storytelling, writing, and content production across multi-channel platforms (social, web, reports, campaigns, and media).
- Strong understanding of gender equality, youth empowerment, and socio-economic development issues in Kenya and East Africa, with the ability to translate these into participant-centered narratives that influence mindsets.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating field-based communications and documentation across multiple implementing partners or program sites.
- Experience in leading or managing digital communication strategies and campaigns, including audience growth, analytics interpretation, and message optimization.
- Experience engaging with media outlets, journalists, and influencers, including preparing press materials, briefings, and supporting media relations.
- 2+ years journalism or agency experience is an added advantage.
- Proven ability to adapt messaging and tone for diverse audiences including communities, donors, policymakers, and the general public.
- Demonstrated commitment to safeguarding, consent, and ethical, participant centered storytelling aligned to HER Lab’s values. Skills and Competencies:
- Exceptional writing, interviewing, and editorial judgment skills, with a keen eye for narrative quality and impact.
- Strong visual and digital storytelling instincts with working proficiency in photography, or multimedia production tools.
