Principal Legal Officer
Purpose of the job:
- This position is responsible for the implementation of the legal services strategy and plans, handling litigations and provision of legal advice to the office.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Representing the Office in court/ tribunals and give evidence on behalf of the office where necessary;
- Preparing legal documentation and legal briefs, representing the Office in court/tribunals and in preparation to represent the Office in court
- Implementing risk management of the Office by ensuring compliance with all relevant statutory and regulatory requirements;
- Implementing pre-trial, in-trial and post-trial prosecution and litigation strategies and techniques to ensure efficient, effective and just results;
- Participating in the legal compliance and Governance audits and ensuring that recommendations therefrom are implemented as required;
- Assist in the development and implementation of the Legal Directorate’s strategy and plans by providing information and input in the structuring of the strategy;
- Reviewing contracts, Service Level Agreements, Memorandum of Understanding, leases and other legal documents to ensure compliance to statutory requirements and the Office’s policies
- Participating in the preparation of the legal services budget and implement;
- Advising the Office on legal matters, policies and procedures to enhance compliance hence reducing reputational, legal and financial risks;
- Participating in the drafting and reviewing contracts and agreements between the Office and other parties;
- Carry out searches at the registries i.e., lands, company registry and court files as appropriate in support of legal decisions;
Requirements for Appointment:
- Bachelor of Law (LL. B) degree from a recognized university;
- Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the Council of Legal Education;
- Be an advocate for the High Court of Kenya;
- Be a member of good standing of the Law Society of Kenya;
- Be in possession of a current practicing license;
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- At least 9 years’ relevant experience.
