Role Outline
- The Health and Safety, Security & BCM Lead – East Africa is responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring, and leading Health & Safety programs, as well as Security and Business Continuity Management across DHL Supply Chain operations in the region. This role will have a 50% focus on Health & Safety and 50% on Security/BCM, ensuring a secure and safe operational environment while minimizing risks, losses, and incidents. The incumbent will work closely with internal stakeholders, external authorities, and industry partners to enhance Health & Safety and Security/BCM culture in line with DHL’s global standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and enforce Health & Safety, Security, Business Continuity Management policies, procedures, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Implement and maintain BCM Standards throughout the sites (BS25999).
- Manage investigations into theft, fraud, and Security & Health & Safety breaches, coordinate with law enforcement as necessary.
- Minimize losses, thefts, and Security & Health & Safety related incidents within the area of responsibility.
- Implement regional Health & Safety, Security, and Business Continuity Management strategy.
- Develop close relationships with local law enforcement, key customers, and governmental bodies.
- Facilitate Health & Safety, Security, and Business Continuity Management training programs for employees and contractors (including emergency response and fire safety).
- Provide management with regular Security & Health & Safety advice and consultation on complex security issues.
- Communicate and act as contact for Health & Safety, Security, and Business Continuity Management-related issues to sub-regional/country management.
- Work with operations teams to implement incident prevention strategies, focusing on Transport and warehouse Health & Safety.
- Develop and implement occupational health and Health & Safety (OHS) programs to foster a Health & Safety-first culture across all DHL Supply Chain sites.
- Conduct and coordinate investigations under the supervision of the Africa Security Lead.
- Develop Security, Business Continuity Management, and Health & Safety concepts and processes for new business.
- Serve as the key interface for sub-regional/country management in implementing Security, Business Continuity Management, and Health & Safety standards.
- Ensure compliance with global DHL Health & Safety, Security, and Business Continuity Management standards and industry best practices, including ISO.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory Health & Safety requirements, collaborating with relevant agencies and authorities.
- Ensure ISO 45001 management system is implemented and maintained.
- Ensure DPDHL OHS standards are implemented and maintained.
- Assess OHS trends and ensure mitigation measures to drive a safe culture across the sites.
- Drive Leading and Lagging OHS indicators with improvement plans.
- Conduct OHS audits to ensure standardization and compliance; drive any deviations.
- Assist in project and tender processes by assessing risk to the business and providing support.
- Drive the OHS Strategy and implement improvement plans to address any deviations.
- Support and drive OHS investigation processes and compliance and follow up with effectiveness meetings.
- Ensure compliance on OHS month-end reports and meeting deadlines.
Local Accountabilities
- Oversee Health & Safety, Security, and Business Continuity Management operations at all DHL Supply Chain warehouses, transport networks, and offices in East Africa.
- Implement and monitor site-specific Health & Safety, Security, and Business Continuity Management measures to prevent losses, theft, and unauthorized access.
- Conduct Security, Business Continuity Management, and Health & Safety risk assessments at each facility and operational site to ensure proactive risk mitigation.
- Investigate Security and Health & Safety incidents, theft, and fraud, working closely with local law enforcement agencies to ensure swift resolution.
- Lead and monitor Leading and Lagging OHS performances against targets and implement improvement plans.
Qualifications & Experience
- Master’s degree in Criminology or related field (Desirable).
- At least 5 years in a position within Security, Business Continuity Management, and Health & Safety management.
- Familiarity with the logistics and supply chain industry within East Africa, including, key players, Operational challenges and Market dynamics.
- Proven track record of managing in a supply chain environment.
- CPP and CFI certified.
- Exceptional knowledge of supply chain-related Security and Health & Safety management.
- Knowledge of available local Security and Health & Safety technologies and infrastructure.
- Ability to integrate these technologies effectively into DHL’s Security and Health & Safety systems.
- Active participation in local business and Security and Health & Safety networks.
