Dental Assistant

Job purpose  

The overall purpose of this job is to provide patient care in line with hospital’s values, mission and vision.

Main duties and responsibilities 

  • Assisting the dentist and COHO during a variety of treatment procedures.
  • Taking and recording dental radiographs (x-rays).
  • Asking about the patient’s medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse.
  • Serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol and preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment. Also sharpening dental equipment.
  • Ensuring that patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.
  • Providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling).
  • Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health;(e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counselling).
  • Performing office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer.
  • Helping to provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics and oral surgery.
  • Maintaining dental equipment and x-ray machine.
  • Maintaining dental equipment inventory.
  • Fabricating temporary restorations and custom impressions from preliminary impressions.
  • Follow company policies to ensure proper discretion and procedures are used.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Requirements 

  • Certification in an accredited dental assistance program.
  • Proven 1-year work experience as a Dental Assistant.
  • Experience using computers for a variety of tasks.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Consistently have professional appearance and attitude.
  • Able to provide great patient care.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations (OSHA).
