Data Analyst at Conservation Alpha
Data Analyst
- Conservation Alpha is seeking a Data Analyst to support diverse clients with data management and data analytics. This is a supporting role, working as part of the data science team to provide specific insights, developing models and visualisations for a range of client-facing projects. Ideal candidates will have solid foundation in data management, experience in R and/or Python, a strong statistical foundation and an interest in biodiversity or conservation science. The position offers opportunities for career growth and skills development tailored to the candidate’s strengths and interests. The Data Analyst will report to the Director of Science of Conservation Alpha but provide project support to the entire team.
- This position is based remotely, preferably within South Africa or Kenya.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collect, clean, and preprocess datasets to ensure accuracy and usability
- Conduct Statistical Analysis
- Work with clients to understand the technical requirements of analyses and visualisations
- Organise and maintain data and code repositories
- Identify and collate publicly and commercially available datasets on a per-project basis
- Work with the team to co-develop appropriate analytical approaches to meet requirements and implement them
- Develop high-quality visualisations for clients
- Undertake literature reviews and critically evaluate content
- Write succinct reports and provide clear recommendations
- Undertake code reviews and assist in documentation of processes
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- MSc in geoinformatics, biostatistics, quantitative ecology, or another related discipline
- Minimum three years of experience working with data analysis and visualisation Right to work in country of residence
NECESSARY COMPETENCIES
- Experience in data curation and metadata management, particularly cloud-based platforms
- A strong understanding of statistics
- Experience in scripting languages like R or Python
- Experience with common visualisation libraries, such as Plotly, ggplot2, and matplotlib.
- Experience with effectively communicating complex results using intuitive visualisations, or visual story- telling
- Exceptional attention to detail, especially in data management and quality control
- Ability to work both independently and in a team, with a willingness to learn new skills
ADVANTAGEOUS
- PhD in a relevant field
- Experience with working on cloud-based platforms, particularly Azure.
- Competency in simple programmatic data ingestion tasks, such as making API calls, working with JSON, or accessing data from platforms
- Experience with Power BI
- Experience using Git and GitHub for version control and collaborative development
- Demonstrate working knowledge of ArcGIS and familiarity with open-source GIS tools such as QGIS,
- Competent in the use of Shiny, with a growing interest in application development and data visualisation
- Demonstrated practical experience in field deployment of surveys used to solve quantitative problems in the conservation space, such as aerial census, LiDAR analyses, camera trap grid analysis etc.
