Barista

Job Purpose

To prepare and serve high-quality coffee, beverages, and light refreshments to Tenwek Hospital staff, patients, and walk-in guests while ensuring exceptional customer service, strict hygiene standards, and adherence to hospital policies. The Barista will also support special beverage requests for internal hospital meetings, functions, and events.

Key Responsibilities
 Beverage Preparation & Service

  • Prepare and serve a wide range of hot and cold beverages (coffee, tea, juices, smoothies, etc.) in line with required quality standards.
  • Customize beverages based on customer preferences, dietary needs, or medical guidance.
  • Ensure consistency, efficiency, and professional presentation in all beverage preparations.

Customer Service

  • Deliver warm, courteous, and professional service to staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Handle customer inquiries, feedback, and complaints promptly and politely.
  • Support special beverage orders and catering needs for hospital meetings, events, and conferences.

Operations & Hygiene

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the coffee station, equipment, and utensils in accordance with hospital hygiene and safety regulations.
  • Adhere to strict food safety and infection control procedures.o
  • Monitor stock levels, request replenishment, and ensure proper storage, rotation, and usage of supplies.

Teamwork & Flexibility

  • Collaborate effectively with the catering team and other hospital departments to ensure smooth operations.
  • Assist in additional catering tasks as required.
  • Provide support during internal and external events hosted by CTC Tenwek Hospital.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Certificate/Diploma in Food & Beverage Service or Hospitality.
  • Barista certification.
  • Previous experience as a Barista in a busy environment.
  • Knowledge of coffee brewing methods and modern beverage preparation techniques.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and sensitive hospital setting.
  • Basic knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and infection control.
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts and support special events.

Method of Application

Job Purpose

  • The role-holder is responsible for accurately registering and generating billing statements for clients while upholding professional standards and office etiquette in line with hospital policies and prevailing regulations.

Job Competencies (Skills Job Knowledge, Experience and Attributes).

Academic qualifications

  • Diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field from a recognized institution.

Professional Qualifications (Special training or Professional certification).

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) – Part 2/Intermediate Level
  • Certified Health Information Management Systems (CHIMS)

Professional Membership/Licensing requirements

  • Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK)

Previous relevant work experience required (including a specific length or type of experience in a certain job or level.)

  • Have a minimum of 1-2 years of clerical or accounting experience or similar position in the health  sector.

Functional Skills, Behavioural Competencies/Attributes:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of medical billing software and medical documentation evaluation.
  • Multi-tasking and time-management skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to learn and implement new operating procedures, understanding abstract ideas, problem-solving and improvising applicable solutions.
  • Good understanding of escalation triggers at the work situationso
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, be self-driven
  • Have a track record of integrity and meeting ambitious targets.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office tools i.e., Excel, Word, PowerPoint
