Baseline Study for the Methane Reduction Project in Kenya’s Livestock Sector
Key tasks include:
- Conduct a desk review of relevant project documents, policies, and research on livestock methane reduction and climate-smart agriculture in Kenya.
- Develop and validate the baseline study methodology, sampling design, and data collection tools.
- Conduct field data collection among targeted stakeholders and beneficiaries.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data to establish baseline indicators.
- Produce a comprehensive baseline report with recommendations for monitoring and impact assessment.
- Carry out Financial and economic analysis of the recommended /Proposed Methane Mitigation strategies.
Methodology
The consultant is expected to employ a mixed-methods approach, integrating both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. These will include household surveys among dairy farmers. – Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with government officials, dairy cooperatives, and technical partners. – Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with youth, women, and farmer groups. Direct measurements and secondary data analysis on methane emission levels (as feasible). Gender analysis to assess inclusion in climate action and technology adoption. An Inception Report will be prepared within five (5) working days after contracting, detailing the methodology, sampling framework, data tools, and work plan for approval by Solidaridad.
Expected Deliverables
The consultant will deliver the following:
- Inception report (including detailed methodology and work plan).
- Data collection tools and pre-testing report.
- Field data sets (raw and cleaned data).
- Draft baseline report for review by Solidaridad and partners.
- Final baseline report incorporating feedback from stakeholders.
- PowerPoint presentation of key findings for validation.
Consultant Qualifications
Eligible firms or individual consultants must have:
- Advanced degree in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Livestock production, Climate Change, or related fields.
- Proven experience in livestock value chain assessments or methane emission studies.
- Demonstrated experience in baseline and impact evaluations using mixed methods.
- Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
- Experience working with the State Department for Livestock Development (SDLD), county governments and communities in Kenya.
Method of Application
Interested consultancy firms or individuals must submit an EOI of not more than 15 pages and include the following:
- A Brief Proposal: Clearly outlining the proposed study methodology, approach, and a detailed work plan, including key activities and timelines.
- Samples of Previous Related Work: At least one or two examples of past assignments relevant to this scope, especially in the cereals value chains or agricultural evaluations.
- Financial Proposal: A comprehensive budget with a detailed breakdown of all cost components.
- Updated CVs: For the Team Leader and all team members. Each CV should not exceed two pages, clearly indicating relevant experience.
