About this role
The Nonprofit Financial Strategist leads the financial direction for a portfolio of 10 to 12 nonprofit clients. You will oversee accounting operations, guide budgeting and forecasting, support audits, and ensure accurate reporting. This role blends hands-on accounting oversight with high-level financial guidance. You will also mentor Finance Managers and Bookkeepers assigned to your client accounts.
The work requires strong organization, clear communication, and the ability to manage several priorities at once. This role suits someone who enjoys structure, ownership, and consistent follow-through in a remote setting.
Financial analysis and reporting duties
Lead annual budgeting processes, including operating and grant budgets.
Prepare budget-to-actual reports with clear explanations.
Deliver monthly financial forecasts with practical insight.
Prepare financial reports for nonprofit leadership and boards.
Explain financial results in simple, clear language.
Process improvement and systems
Review and improve financial workflows and procedures.
Document processes using written and recorded SOPs.
Maintain consistency across client accounts and team workflows.
Support strong internal controls and financial clarity.
Audit and compliance support
Lead audit preparation and coordination with audit firms.
Prepare audit schedules and required documentation.
Review draft audit reports for accuracy.
Ensure clients remain audit-ready year-round.
Tax filing responsibilities
Prepare and electronically file IRS 990 series forms.
Oversee internal reviews of tax filings.
Support state filing requirements when needed.
Bookkeeping oversight
Support monthly close processes in QuickBooks Online.
Review reconciliations for banks, credit cards, and payment platforms.
Oversee accounts payable and receivable reconciliations.
Support fundraising database reconciliations and journal entries.
Coach bookkeepers to maintain accuracy and consistency.
Project and client management
Serve as lead contact during client onboarding.
Manage timelines, tasks, and budgets for accounting projects.
Use tools such as Slack, Double, and email to track work.
Balance priorities across multiple client accounts.
Team collaboration
Work closely with other Financial Strategists and Finance Managers.
Share knowledge and improve internal practices.
Support a cooperative and respectful team culture.
Celebrate progress and shared success.
Experience and skills required
At least three years leading the finance function of a nonprofit organization.
Strong experience with nonprofit accounting and reporting standards.
Hands-on experience with nonprofit audits and restricted funds.
Advanced QuickBooks Online skills, ProAdvisor preferred.
Strong ability to manage 10 to 12 client relationships.
Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organization and project tracking skills.
Ability to handle sensitive financial information with care.
Technical tools and systems
QuickBooks Online and related integrations.
Google Sheets and Excel for reporting and analysis.
Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, and cloud storage tools.
