About the Role
The Agronomist plays a crucial role in supporting farm operations by monitoring crop health, managing soil and fertility needs, contributing to pest management strategies, and supporting quality control throughout the growing season. This is a hands-on role requiring regular field scouting, sample collection, irrigation support, and close collaboration with farm teams. The position provides strong exposure to large-scale farming operations, agronomy technology, and research-driven crop management.
Responsibilities
- Conduct regular field scouting to assess crop health and identify insects, diseases, and overall plant development.
- Monitor soil moisture levels and assist in developing irrigation schedules.
- Collect plant tissue and soil samples for fertility analysis during the growing season.
- Assist with fertilizer recommendations, nutrient management, and application strategies.
- Support quality control activities such as seed handling, planter accuracy checks, and irrigation system evaluations.
- Perform test digs to track crop maturity, quality, and yield estimates.
- Collect samples from fields and storage facilities to support monitoring and reporting.
- Provide daily guidance and supervision for Agronomy Technicians and seasonal field employees.
- Support fertilizer and chemical applications, including mixing, loading, and storage organization.
- Handle potatoes carefully to avoid bruising and maintain quality standards.
- Participate in ongoing learning of crop production methods and emerging agronomic practices.
- Assist in executing pest management and crop protection strategies.
- Support storage management tasks and contribute to crop management planning.
- Participate in research and development projects by collecting crop trial data.
- Maintain accurate records of chemical and fertilizer application data.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall farm operations.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor of Science in Agronomy or a related field.
- Private applicator license, or ability to obtain certification (chemigation/fumigation).
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to pass insurance verification.
Desired:
- Previous experience in agronomy, preferably with potatoes.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to accurate sampling and reporting.
- Familiarity with irrigated farming operations.
- Experience operating farm equipment.
- English/Spanish bilingual ability is an advantage.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent outdoor fieldwork in variable weather conditions.
- Walking, lifting, and carrying items weighing up to 40–50 lbs.
- Driving across farm properties and to facility sites as needed.
